SMSU closes season with a split on Sunday

OWATONNA, Minn. –
The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team concluded its season on Sunday with a split of two NSIC matches at the Owatonna West Tennis Center.
 
SMSU opened the day with a 7-2 loss to Bemidji State, but closed out the season with a 7-2 victory over Minnesota Crookston.
 
SMSU finishes the season with an overall record of 2-15, 1-10 NSIC.
 
In the win over UMC, SMSU's No. 1 doubles team of Crystal Overbaugh and Gabby Tellijohn earned a 9-8 (7-2) victory, while the No. 2 team of Ashley Hoehne and Britney Thompson picked up an 8-3 victory. SMSU's No. 3 doubles team of Mariya Krumm and Madyson Brinkman earned the first point of the match with an 8-0 win.
 
Krumm, at No. 5 singles and Hoehne at No. 3 singles, both recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories to help lead the Mustangs. Jenna Gannott won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, while Thompson also earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
 
In the loss to BSU, Thompson picked up SMSU's only win at singles with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 5. Tellijohn and Overbaugh combined to record an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles for SMSU's other team point.
 
Crystal Overbaugh was SMSU's lone senior on the 2016 roster.
