Mustang tennis splits two matches on Sunday

MARSHALL, Minn. –
The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches on Sunday at the Marshall High School tennis courts.
 
SMSU dropped an 8-1 decision to Bethel University, before rebounding with an 8-1 victory to Buena Vista University (Iowa.)
 
In the loss to Bethel, the Mustangs picked up their lone point at No. 2 doubles, as Ashley Hoehne and Hannah Starke picked up an 8-2 decision. Brittany Soupir and Jenna Gannott dropped a hard-fought 8-6 match at No. 3 doubles.
 
SMSU was swept in all six single matches.
 
In the win over BVU, SMSU won all three doubles matches to build a 3-0 lead. Gabby Tellijohn and Paige Janka won 8-5 at No. 1, Hoehne and Starke picked up an 8-2 win at No. 2, while Soupir and Gannott picked up an 8-3 decision.
 
Hoehne (No. 3) and Janka (No. 4) both recorded 8-1 victories in singles play, while Soupir and Gannot both won their matches by injury default. Starke earned SMSU's final point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 singles. Due to time restraints, singles matches were played using 8-game pro sets.
 
Southwest Minnesota State concludes its fall season at 1-2. The team will resume the 2016-17 season in February.
