WINONA, Minn. -- The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Winona State on Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. With the loss the Mustangs drop to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play while the Warriors (4-0, 4-0 NSIC) have now won four straight conference matches to begin the season.
"Winona State is a talented team and they were the better team tonight," head coach
Adam Henning said. "We flashed signs of good tennis but we need to sustain it for longer periods of times to give us a chance to win."
Gabby Tellijohn won her second consecutive NSIC No. 1 singles match in comeback fashion as the junior posted a 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), 1-0 (10-8) victory over Kaisey Skibba. It was SMSU's lone point in the match. "Gabby continues to get better and better with each match," Henning said. "She struggled with her backhand at times tonight but fought through it and managed to find a way." Tellijohn is now 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC at No. 1 singles.
Tellijohn teamed up with
Paige Janka at No. 1 doubles but fell 8-5 to Rachel Gantz and Skibba.
Jenna Gannott played well at No. 5 singles but lost 6-3, 6-4 to Katie Scruggs.
SMSU will be back in action tomorrow morning vs. Upper Iowa (3-0, 3-0 NSIC). First serve is slated for 9 a.m. from the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn.
