MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams put together several strong performances on Friday in day one of the NSIC Championships at Myers Fieldhouse.
Highlighting Friday's action was
Jordan Flinn, who earned All-NSIC honors with a second place finish in the weight throw, recording a toss of 17.61m. Teammate
Alex Weis also earned a point for SMSU finishing in eighth place with a mark of 16.83m.
SMSU's distance medley of
Kelly Fitzsimmons,
Austin LaFollette,
Chris Kveseth and
Bashir Aidrus earned three points for the Mustangs with a sixth place finish of 10:37.91.
Zach Jones advanced to Saturday's final in the 400m crossing the line at 50.38, while
Austin LaFollette also advanced to the finals of the 600m, recording a time of 1:23.72.
In the 60m, SMSU's
Quadri Busari and
Gabe Galamue both advanced to Saturday's finals with times of 6.99 and 7.02 respectively.
Chris Kveseth finished second in his heat in the 800m with a time of 1:58.28 and also advances to Saturday's final.
For the Mustang women's team,
Rylee Armstrong earned two and a half team points with a sixth place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.6m.
Eisha Oden broke the school record in the 400m with time of 57.70 and advances to Saturday's finals.
Kim Shabino also put her name atop the SMSU record book in the 200m, running a time of 25.19 and advancing to the finals on Saturday.
Nikki Atwood also set a school record in the 600m with a time of 1:41.29, but just missed advancing to the finals.
Through seven events scored on the women's side, SMSU has 2.5 points and is currently in 12
th place overall out of 15. On the men's side, SMSU has 12 points through six events and is tied for seventh out of 11 teams.
The final day of the NSIC Championships begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
