Track & field opens indoor season with strong day in Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's and men's track & field teams opened its indoor season with a strong day at the Minnesota State Chuck Petersen Open held inside Myers Field House.
 
On the men's side, Roel Palomo picked up a first-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.98.
 
Jacob Kunkel placed second in the high jump at 1.94m, while Peda Zeba finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.91m.
 
Josh Coulby had a strong first collegiate meet placing fifth in the shot put with a mark of 15.61m.
 
Deekon Anvid earned fifth-place in the weight throw at 16.28m.
 
For the SMSU women, Christine Sleeter hit an NCAA provisional mark in the high jump earning third place at 1.67m.
 
Kyra Kusnierek ran 2:25.13 to finish second in the 800 meters.
 
Emily Lorentz closed with a toss of 12.11m in the shot put to finish sixth with teammate Seely Stockmoe finishing eighth at 11.46m.
 
Ella Doble ran 26.34 in the 200 meters crossing the line in seventh place.
 
SMSU will return to competition on Jan. 24, 2026, at the Wayne State NCAA Showdown.
