MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team closed out its fall season today picking up a pair of non-conference victories over Ripon College and Wisconsin-Stout.
SMSU earned a 9-0 win over Ripon and completed the perfect day with a 6-3 win over UW-Stout. SMSU ends its fall season with a 2-1 record.
In the win over Ripon, SMSU cruised to three victories in doubles play, then earned six wins in singles play via forfeit.
Gabby Tellijohn and
Cora Delich earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles,
Hannah Starke and
Olivia Watzke recorded an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while
Paige Janka and
Jenna Gannott teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 3 singles.
In the victory over UW-Stout, Tellijohn and Delich recorded another 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Starke and Watzke recorded a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Janka combined with
Gabby Potthoff to pick up an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to build a 3-0 match lead.
Delich picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win in No. 2 singles and was followed at No. 3 singles with a Starke 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Watzke helped secure the match win for the Mustangs with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles.
Tellijohn suffered a loss via injury default while in a third set super tie-breaker at No. 1 singles. Janka lost a tough 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) match at No. 5 singles while Gannott suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback at No. 6 singles.
Southwest Minnesota State will open its 2018 spring season in February.
