SMSU drops a pair of matches in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team opened the 2018 spring and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season on Saturday night and Sunday morning with a pair of losses. SMSU opened with an 8-1 loss to the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday night, before losing 9-0 to defending NSIC champion Augustana on Sunday morning. Both matches were played at Huether Family Match Pointe.
 
In the USF match on Sunday, Cora Delich picked up the lone victory for SMSU at No. 2 singles, earning a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 decision over Megan Quandt.
 
SMSU lost the other five singles matches in straight sets.
 
SMSU's Paige Janka and Gabby Potthoff dropped a tight 9-8 (7-4) match at No. 3 doubles, while SMSU's No. 1 doubles pair of Gabby Tellijohn and Delich lost 8-1 and its No. 2 doubles team of Hannah Starke and Olivia Watzke dropped its match by an 8-4 score.
 
USF improves to 4-0 overall, 2-0 NSIC.

On Sunday, SMSU lost in straight sets in all six singles matches.

SMSU returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 17, taking on Upper Iowa, before facing Winona State on Sunday, Feb. 18, with both matches in Owatonna, Minnesota.
