WINONA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team picked up its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory on Sunday morning defeating Upper Iowa, 4-0 at the Winona Tennis Center.

SMSU improves to 6-3 overall, 1-1 NSIC, and has defeated UIU for the second straight season.

The Mustangs earned the doubles point as
Fatima Murphy and
Olivia Watzke won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while
Daniela Flores and
Paige Janka won via forfeit at No. 3 doubles to secure the point.
Cora Delich and
Hannah Starke led their match at No. 2 doubles by a 5-3 score.

In singles play,
Hanna Himmelman earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5, while Starke won via forfeit at No. 6. SMSU clinched the match at No. 3 as
Olivia Watzke, who won the first set 6-0 and led 3-0 in the second, won via injury default. Due to poor weather conditions, the other three single matches were not completed so both teams could head home.

Southwest Minnesota State continues NSIC play next Saturday, Feb. 16, with a pair of matches in St. Peter, Minn. The Mustangs take on UMary at 1 p.m., before taking on MSU Moorhead at 6:30 p.m. with both matches at the Swanson Tennis Center.
