SMSU drops a pair of matches on Saturday

ST. PETER, Minn. –
The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis had a busy day on Saturday with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.
 
SMSU opened the day with a 4-3 loss to the University of Mary, before losing 7-0 to MSU Moorhead on Saturday night. The Mustangs are now 6-5 overall, 1-3 NSIC.
 
In the day's first match, UMary earned the doubles point earning two hard fought victories. SMSU's No. 3 doubles team of Hannah Starke and Cora Delich won 7-5, but SMSU's No. 1 team of Fatima Murphy and Olivia Watzke lost a tough 6-3 match. UMary won the No. 2 doubles match as Daniela Flores and Paige Janka lost by a score of 6-4.
 
In singles action, SMSU's Flores won at No. 3 by a score of 6-3, 7-5, while Starke won at No. 5 by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). Hanna Himmelman also earned a victory for the Mustangs at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-1 sweep.
 
In the loss to MSUM, Flores was the only Mustang to win a set in singles play losing 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 3.

Southwest Minnesota State continues NSIC play on Saturday, Feb. 23, facing St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth in St. Peter.
