MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University head women's tennis coach
Jon Parker announced on Tuesday, Courtenay Leonard has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and tennis career at SMSU.
Leonard, originally from Albuquerque, N.M., is a transfer from Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kan., and will have three years of eligibility remaining. Leonard played mainly No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles during the 2020 season and finished the season ranked No. 18 in the region in singles play. Cowley closed the season ranked No. 6 in the Junior College national team rankings.
Leonard is a 2019 graduate of Sandia High School where she was a four-year letter winner and placed at the state meet all four years. Leonard was a doubles state champion as a senior and also helped Sandia finished undefeated and win the state Class 5A team championship in 2019.
"I believe Courtenay will bring a lot of great experience from the JUCO level to our team," Parker said. "She will be a top player in our program and strong student in the classroom."
Leonard is the second student-athlete to sign with SMSU for the upcoming 2020-21 season, joining Maja Louisa Harck from Harrislee, Germany, who signed last month.
Parker recently completed his first season at SMSU after being named to the position in January.
