SMSU softball looks to bounce back against MSU Moorhead and Northern State

               PREVIEWING SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
•The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team (16-10, 7-5 NSIC) will continue on the road with NSIC play with doubleheaders against MSU Moorhead (6-20, 4-8 NSIC) on Saturday, and Northern State (18-8, 9-3 NSIC) on Sunday.  Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn. and Sundays will start at noon in Aberdeen, S.D.
•Following the weekend, SMSU will be back home Wednesday playing Wayne State starting at 1 p.m. at Mustang Field.

                ABOUT MSU MOORHEAD
•MSU Moorhead, picked 16th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' poll, is 6-20, 4-8 NSIC this season going into Saturday's doubleheader. 
•The Dragons split doubleheaders versus Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State this past weekend. The Dragons took game one 1-0 against the Golden Eagles but would fall 5-1 in game two. Against BSU, game one would go to the Beavers with a score of 7-4. Game two would go extra innings with MSU Moorhead pulling out the 2-1 win. 
•Augustana is led by Emma Dummer, who is batting .338 and leading her team in hits (24), RBIs (12), and doubles (7). 
•Miah Hartvigsen is hitting .302 while recording 16 hits and five runs.
•The Dragons are batting .243 and averaging 2.6 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 7.07 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 162 1/3 innings. 
 
               SERIES HISTORY VS. MSU MOORHEAD
•SMSU and MSU Moorhead have meet 112 times since the 1976 season with SMSU leading 80-32 in the all-time series.
•The Mustangs hold a 32-game winning streak which started back on May 5, 2006. The last matchup MSU Moorhead and SMSU had was on April 15, 2019, where SMSU won 12-1. 
 
               ABOUT NORTHERN STATE
•Northern State, picked seventh in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' poll, is 18-8, 9-3 NSIC this season going into the weekend. 
•The Wolves swept both Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State this past weekend, shutting out the Beavers and Golden Eagles in both doubleheaders. 
•Northern State is led by Kennady Thompson, who is batting .453 and has 29 hits with three home runs and 18 RBIs.
•Makenzie Merritt is hitting .351 while leading her team in home runs (7) and RBIs (26) while recording 26 hits. 
•The Wolves are batting .336 and averaging 5.2 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 3.10 ERA with 211 strikeouts in 162 1/3 innings. 
 
               SERIES HISTORY VS. NORTHERN STATE
•SMSU and Northern State have meet 88 times since the 1986 season with the Mustangs leading 65-23 in the all-time series.
•SMSU and NSU split a non-conference doubleheader winning game two and snapping a seven-game losing streak. 
 
                SMSU HEAD COACH
Bailey Bouman is in her third season as head coach with an overall record of 44-43, including 20-22 in NSIC play.
•The 11th head coach in program history, Bouman was named to the position on Aug. 8, 2019.
•SMSU finished 19-26 during her first season in 2019 and qualified for the NSIC Tournament. 
•Bouman was an assistant coach with the SMSU women's basketball program from 2015-17 and was also an assistant women's basketball coach at Dordt College (Iowa) before returning to SMSU.
•Bouman is a 2014 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls where she played both basketball and softball for the Cougars. 
 
                SMSU DIAMOND NOTES
•SMSU looks to come back after being swept by No. 1 Augustana on Wednesday with a 10-2 loss in game one and a 9-1 defeat in game two.  
•In the opener against Augustana, Lileya Kebos would single to center field and bring home Emma Grote and Kali Tomlinson. With those two RBIs Kebos is second on her team this season in RBIs (17) behind Tomlinson who has 29. 
•In game two, Bailey Johnson would hit her third solo home run of season. 
 
                  GROTE EARNS 2020 ACADEMIC HONOR
•Senior Emma Grote was named CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight season following the 2020 season.
 
                  NSIC TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO ROCHESTER
•The 2021 NSIC Tournament will be held in May 13-15 in Rochester, Minn., at the RYFSA Complex. 
•The top 10 teams in the final regular season standings will qualify for the tournament with the champion earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 
 
                  SMSU PICKED 10TH IN NSIC POLL
•Southwest Minnesota State University was picked to finish 10th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•Mustang senior Megan Cull was named a "Pitcher to Watch", while junior outfielder Bailey Johnson was named a "Player to Watch" in the NSIC this spring. 
 
                   MUSTANG HISTORY
•Southwest Minnesota State is in its 50th season of softball in 2021.
•SMSU has played 1,887 games compiling an all-time record of 976-910-1.
•SMSU has won 10 NSIC regular season championships, two NSIC Tournament titles and has played in four NCAA Tournaments.
