The Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State baseball teams played a pair of tightly-contested extra innings games on Saturday splitting a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Corbett Field.

The two teams conclude the series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. game.

In game one, the Beavers scored all four runs in the second inning on a run-scoring single and three-run home run off Mustang starting pitcher John Bezdicek.

SMSU slowly cut into the deficit in the fourth as Derek Smith doubled and later scored on a sac fly by Kip Gronholz. In the sixth, SMSU used wild pitching by MISU to plate two more runs. Nathan Kuhn, Matt Bezdicek was hit by a pitch and Derek Smith walked to load the bases with one out. Gronholz would also work a walk to score the first run, while Max Kalenberg reached on a fielder's choice to score another run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

SMSU would tie the game in the seventh with Kuhn starting the rally with a one-out single. Following a walk to Bezdicek, Hendricks hit a ground ball up the middle with the shortstop stepping on second for an out, but the throw to first was wild to allow Kuhn to score the tying run.

The Mustangs used a two-out rally to score the winning run in the eighth. Chase McDaniel singled with two outs and promptly stole second. Moments later, McDaniel scored on a throwing error by the MISU shortstop on a ground ball by Keenan Wenzel to put SMSU in the lead at 5-4.

SMSU opened the scoring in the second inning on a McDaniel RBI single to plate Derek Smith. Kuhn would make the score 2-0 in the third on a run-scoring single to score Kalenberg.
