MINOT, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State baseball teams played a pair of tightly-contested extra innings games on Saturday splitting a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Corbett Field.

SMSU rallied from a 4-0 deficit in game one to win 5-4 in eight innings, while MISU scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 5-4 walk-off victory in game two and hand SMSU its ninth one-run loss of the season.

The two teams conclude the series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. game.

In game one, the Beavers scored all four runs in the second inning on a run-scoring single and three-run home run off Mustang starting pitcher
John Bezdicek.

SMSU slowly cut into the deficit in the fourth as
Derek Smith doubled and later scored on a sac fly by
Kip Gronholz. In the sixth, SMSU used wild pitching by MISU to plate two more runs.

Matt Bezdicek was hit by a pitch and
Derek Smith walked to load the bases with one out. Gronholz would also work a walk to score the first run, while
Max Kalenberg reached on a fielder's choice to score another run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

SMSU would tie the game in the seventh with Kuhn starting the rally with a one-out single. Following a walk to Bezdicek, Hendricks hit a ground ball up the middle with the shortstop stepping on second for an out, but the throw to first was wild to allow Kuhn to score the tying run.

The Mustangs used a two-out rally to score the winning run in the eighth.
Chase McDaniel singled with two outs and promptly stole second. Moments later, McDaniel scored on a throwing error by the MISU shortstop on a ground ball by
Keenan Wenzel to put SMSU in the lead at 5-4.

Jared Tschetter worked a perfect bottom of the eighth to secure the win and earn his third save of the season.

John Bezdicek (4-1) earned the victory in the mound for SMSU firing seven innings and recording 11 strikeouts and allowing four runs on four hits.

Hendricks had two of SMSU's seven hits in the victory.

In game two, Hendricks belted a lead-off home run over the center field fence in the eighth inning to put SMSU in the lead at 4-3.

MISU however rallied in the home half of the eighth to pick up the walk-off win, taking advantage of a hit by pitch, two walks, a single and three wild pitches. The Beavers scored the game-winning run with two outs on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

SMSU opened the scoring in the second inning on a McDaniel RBI single to plate
Derek Smith. Kuhn would make the score 2-0 in the third on a run-scoring single to score Kalenberg.

The Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but could only muster one run on a ground out by Kalenberg to push the lead to 3-0.

MISU would score two runs on three hits in the fourth and eventually tied the game with a run in the sixth.

Jake Wensmann pitched 5 1/3 solid innings for the Mustangs, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Tschetter (2-3), the third of three relievers used in the game, suffered the loss.

SMSU held a 10-9 hit advantage in the nightcap with
Brodie Smith, McDaniel and Hendricks all finishing with two hits.
