SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) suffered a 39-6 loss at the hands of Augustana (4-3, 3-0 NSIC) in the Mustangs' first action in over a month at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Saturday afternoon.
 
The match started at 125 pounds, with Jaxson Rohman of Augustana controlling the bout, defeating Ben Emrich by major decision, 19-5 to give the Vikings an early 4-0 lead. Jack Huffman would waste no time increasing the Augie lead, defeating Hunter Pfantz via first period pin to go up 10-0 through two bouts. Brayden Curry would keep the Viking ship sailing, defeating Justin Sampson 5-2 in a hard-fought bout at 141 pounds. 
 
The Mustangs would get on the board at 149 as Robert Shields would win by 10-6 decision over Kenneth Lenger to trail 13-3 after four bouts. Augie would get back on track at 157, as Tyler Wagener would defeat Lucas Hodges by major decision to extend the Augie lead to 17-3. 
 
Following the intermission, Augie picked up right where they left off, winning by major decision at 165 and by fall at 174 to take a commanding 27-3 lead with three bouts to go. Caden Steffen picked up his tenth win of the season, defeating Kolby Kost 6-1 to give SMSU its second win of the dual. Augie would pick up pins at 197 and 285 to close the dual. 
 
"It was tough to see the team take that loss." Said head coach Chayse Jackson. "We have battled adversity just to be here today, so I am glad they chose to show up and fight. We have a short week, so it's time to forget it, and move on to Moorhead."
 
SMSU will be back on the mat Thursday, Jan. 20 in Moorhead to face the Dragons of MSU Moorhead at 7 p.m.
