BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University track & field teams opened its indoor season on Friday and Saturday competing at the SDSU Holiday Open and Multi at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
 
Sierra Clifford led the SMSU's women's team setting a school record on Friday in the 600 meters placing fifth with a time of 1:38.30.
 
Anna Holst ran 26.43 to earn a ninth place finish in the 200 meters, while Clifford finished 11^th at 26.52.
 
Emily Van Roekel closed with a time of 1:01.75 in the 400 meters to earn fifth place.
 
Leah Tietjens closed with a best jump of 1.50 meters to finish in a tie for ninth place.
 
The Mustangs had a pair of top 10 finishes on the pole vault with Sarena Schwartz earning a ninth place finish at 3.20m with teammate Shealyn Tom tying for 10^th place at 3.05m.
 
Nadia Sanford finished with a toss of 13.13m in the shot put to earn a solid fifth place finish out of 40 athletes. Sanford also picked up a 17^th place finish in the weight throw at 14.24m.
 
For the men's team, Deekon Anvid set a new school mark in the discus with a throw of 42.83m to finish in eighth place.  
 
Tyler Smith ran 22.71 in the 200 meters to finish ninth overall, while Hunter Smith cleared 4.35m to earn a sixth place finish in the pole vault.
 
Carl Swedzinski had a strong showing in the weight throw finishing in fourth place with a mark of 17.63m.
 
Tyler Nebelung recorded a toss of 13.37m in the shot put to place 13^th.
 
SMSU will be off for the holidays and return to completion on Jan. 20, 2023, at the SDSU D2 Invite in Brookings.
