SMSU women's track & field / cross country members earn CSC Academic honors

MARSHALL, Minn. – Five members of the Southwest Minnesota State University women's track & field / cross country team earned spots on the 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team announced on Wednesday.
 
Named to the All-District team include sophomore Sierra Clifford, senior Morgan Hughes, sophomore Macie Langstraat, junior Nadia Sanford and sophomore Shealyn Tom.
 
The 2023 Academic All-District® women's track & field / cross country teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student- athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 28.
 
Clifford, a two-time Academic All-NSIC honoree this season, is a two-year member of the track & field team, and hails from Hayward, Wis. A biology major, she finished fourth in the 400-meters at the 2023 NSIC Outdoor Championships and was fifth in the 600-meters at the 2023 NSIC Indoor Championships.
 
Hughes, from Sioux Falls, S.D., is a six-time Academic All-NSIC honoree and a biology major with a chemistry minor. This spring she placed 19th in the discus at the NSIC Outdoor Championships.
 
Langstraat, a psychology major from Ankeny, Iowa, is a two-year member of both the cross country and track & field teams. A two-time Academic All-NSIC selection, she placed 22nd in the 800-meters at the 2023 NSIC Outdoor Championships.
 
Sanford, a physical education / health teaching major from Oak Grove, Minn., is a three-year member the track & field team, and is a four-time Academic All-NSIC honoree. This season she finished fifth in the shot put and 10th in the weight throw at the NSIC Indoor Championships and was 13th in the discus and 16th in the shot put at the NSIC Outdoor Championships.
 
Tom, has been a two-year member of the track & field team and is a two-time Academic All-NSIC honoree this season. A native of Brea, Calif., and an art major, she was fourth in the pole vault at the 2023 NSIC Outdoor Championships and placed fifth at the 2023 NSIC Indoor Championships.
