MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's and men's track & field squads had a strong day on Friday competing at the Maverick Invitational inside Myers Field House.
The meet is the final for SMSU prior to next week's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships.
SMSU closed the meet with five first-place finishes and two school records.
Tyler Smith paced the men's team winning the 400-meters crossing the line at 50.14.
Carl Swedzinski set a school record in the weight throw with a toss of 18.21m to finish second overall. The throw was also an NCAA provisional toss. The previous record was 17.89m by Jordan Flinn set during the 2017 season. Swedzinski also finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 14.83m.
Peda Zeba recorded a adistance of 13.08m in the triple jump to finish fifth.
Shealyn Tom broke her own school record in the pole vault clearing 3.52m to take home first place.
Macie Langstraat captured first-place in the 800-meters with a time of 2:22.64, while
Sierra Clifford won the 600-meters at 1:39.32.
Madison Marco earned a third-place time in the 1,000-meters with a time of 3:07.62.
Lexy Gilbert advanced to the finals of the 60-meters and finished fifth at 8.22.
Nadia Sanford placed second in the shot put at 13.20m, finished in fifth in the weight throw at 16.05m, while
Emily Lorentz placed eighth in the weight throw at 15.29m.
SMSU will compete at the NSIC Championships next Friday and Saturday in Mankato.
