MANKATO, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Minnesota State Open on Saturday. The team battled temperatures in the mid 80s and wind up to 30 miles an hour throughout the course of the meet.
Lexy Gilbert, Taytum Klink, Ella Doble and Sierra Clifford finished the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 49.27 to place second.
Clifford won the women's 400-meter with a time of 58.05 and placed second in the 200-meter with a time of 25.77.
Macie Langstraat and Kyra Kusnierek placed third and fourth in the women's 800-meter with times of 2:22.46 and 2:31.52 respectively.
Kaaryna Smidel finished with a time of 1:09.76 in the 400-meter hurdles, to place fifth.
Madison Marco placed fifth in the women's 1500 meter with a time of 5:05.13
In the women's high jump, Rainbow Stands and Christine Sleeter each cleared a height of 1.62 meters, a height that would have placed them in the top 10 at the NSIC championships last spring.
Nancy Peter placed fifth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.04 meters.
On the men's side, Tyler Smith, Max Schmitt, Peda Zeba and Greg Schafer finished second in the men's 4x100 meter relay, finishing with a time of 42.26, only 0.14 seconds behind first place Concordia-St. Paul.
Schmitt also placed second in the men's 400-meter hurdles.
Smith placed third in the men's 400-meter with a time of 49.13 and fifth in the 200-meter with a time of 21.86.
Zeba placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.21 meters.
Tyler Wilson had a throw of 46.14 meters to place fourth in the discus throw.
Carl Swedzinski had a hammer throw of 52.61 meters to place fourth.
The Mustangs will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn. for the Gustavus Twilight and Orange City, Iowa for the Red Raider Open on Friday and Saturday.
