DECORAH, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State women's and men's track & field teams opened the outdoor season on Saturday at the Norse Invite hosted by Luther College setting records and taking home numerous first-place and high finishes.
For the women's team,
Sierra Clifford won the 400 meters with a time of 57.91, while
Hannah Koepfinger won the 100 meter with a time of 15.56.
The Mustangs' 4x400 relay team of Clifford,
Ella Doble,
Macie Langstraat and Koepfinger earned first place with a time of 4:04.13.
Kaaryna Smidel crossed the finish line in 1:07.59 to finish second in the 400-meter hurdles.
Nancy Peter recorded a distance of 11.19m in the triple jump to place second overall.
Madison Marco set a school record in the steeplechase with a time of 11:49.52 to finish in third place. Also setting a school record was
Malayna Kiel in the javelin with a toss of 34.72m to earn third place.
Christine Sleeter also earned a third place finish in the high jump at 1.60m.
On the men's side,
Tyler Smith captured first place in the 400 meters with a time of 49.77, with
Max Schmitt placing first in the 400-meter hurdles at 55.46.
Peda Zeba won the triple jump with a distance of 13.52m, while
Ian Kalin placed second in the pole vault clearing at 3.65m.
Greg Schafer ran 11.05 in the 100 meters to finish third.
Carl Swedzinski recorded a toss of 54.40 in the hammer to place third.
SMSU returns to track on Saturday, April 13, competing at the Minnesota State Open.
