MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's and men's track & field teams had its final meet prior to the conference championships on Wednesday setting a pair of school records at the Maverick Open #1 hosted by Minnesota State University.
For the SMSU men's team,
Tyler Smith set a school record in the 400 meters at 48.64 to finish third overall. He broke the previous record of 48.80 set by Wayne Hawkins in 1991. Hawkins was a standout football player for the Mustangs as well and was a seventh round draft pick by the New England Patriots of the National Football League in 1991.
On the women's side,
Madison Marco placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase breaking her own school record with a time of 11:34.56. Her previous school record was 11:49.52 set earlier this season.
The men's 4x100 relay of Smith,
Max Schmitt,
Peda Zeba and
Greg Schafer took home first place with a time of 41.92.
Nathan Lear had a strong day in the javelin placing third with a throw of 43.71m.
Hunter Smith cleared 4.42m in the pole vault to place third, while
Max Schmitt crossed the line at 54.08 to finish third in the 400-meter hurdles.
Peda Zeba picked up a fifth place mark in the triple jump at 13.31m, while
Chaden Carroll also earned a top five finish in the long jump at 6.77m to record fourth place.
Carl Swedzinski recorded a seventh place toss in the hammer at 52.26m.
Sierra Clifford ran 57.61 in the 400 meters to finish fourth with teammate
Macie Langstraat closing in sixth place in the 800 meters at 2:21.10.
Rainbow Stands cleared 1.60m in the high jump to finish sixth, while
Heather Arlen was ninth in the javelin at 31.28m.
Shealyn Tom placed sixth in the pole vault at 3.26m with
Emily Lorentz earning an eighth place toss of 12.21m in the shot put.
SMSU will now get ready for the NSIC Championships set for May xx-xx in Mankato.
