SMSU softball ready for 16 games over 10 days in Florida

LOOKING AHEAD
• The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team (3-7) returns to action in Florida with 16 games in 10 days.
• The Mustangs will play all THE Spring Games contests at the Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Fla.
• On the first day of THE Spring Games, the Mustangs face off with Pittsburgh Johnstown at 10:15 a.m., and Lynn (Fla.) at 1 p.m., on Monday, March 3. 
• SMSU continues play on Tuesday with a doubleheader versus the College of Staten Island (N.Y.) beginning at 9 a.m.
• SMSU has a day off before resuming play on Thursday, taking on West Virginia Wesleyan at 8 a.m., followed by a game versus Salem (W. Va.) at 10:15 a.m.
• On Friday, March 7, the Mustangs are scheduled to play a pair of afternoon games, taking on St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) at 1 p.m., before squaring off against Dominican (N.Y.) at 3:30 p.m.
• The Mustangs have Saturday off before returning to the diamond for games against Queens (N.Y.) at 1 p.m. and Eckerd (Fla.) at 3:15 p.m.
• SMSU continues THE Spring Games on Monday, March 10, taking on Slipper Rock (Pa.) at 8 a.m. and Lake Erie (Pa.) at 10:15 a.m.
• The Mustangs head to Lakeland, Fla., for a doubleheader against Florida Southern College beginning at 5 p.m., on March 11.
• SMSU concludes its trip on Wednesday, March 12, playing Shepherd (Pa.) at 8 a.m. and Northwood (Mich.) at 11:45 a.m.
• All times listed are central time.

HEAD COACH BAILEY BOUMAN
Bailey Bouman is in her seventh season as head coach at SMSU with an overall record of 115-155, including 64-80 in NSIC play.
• The 11th head coach in program history, Bouman was named to the position on Aug. 8, 2018.
• SMSU finished with a 19-32 overall mark in 2024, missing the NSIC tournament by one game. Abby Boxrud and Paris Van Dyke became the first Mustangs to earn All-NSIC Defensive honors in the Bouman era.
• The Mustangs finished the 2023 season 17-32 and missed the NSIC Tournament for the first time in three seasons. 
• SMSU finished 21-31 in 2022 and won its second NSIC Tournament game in consecutive seasons.
• The Mustangs finished 27-20 in 2021, their best season since 2011, while winning their first NSIC tournament game since Bouman's first season in 2019.
• SMSU finished 19-26 during her first season in 2019 and qualified for the NSIC Tournament.
• Bouman was an assistant coach with the SMSU women's basketball program from 2015-17 and was also an assistant women's basketball coach at Dordt College (Iowa) before returning to SMSU.
• Bouman is a 2014 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls where she played both basketball  and softball for the Cougars.

LAST TIME OUT
• SMSU secured its first sweep of the season, winning 2-1 and 2-0, over the Quincy University Hawks on Feb. 16 at the ASB Sports Complex in Sioux Center, Iowa.
• The Mustangs used runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 2-0 and never looked back in closing out the game-one win.
• SMSU recorded six hits in game one with Brynn Webber leading the bats going 2 for 2 and drawing a walk.
Karlie Miller (2-3) earned the win in game one holding the Hawks scoreless in five innings with a pair of strikeouts. Jordyn Marsh (1) earned her first collegiate save holding off the Hawks in the final two innings with four strikeouts.
• SMSU started and finished strong in game two, tallying its first run in the first inning and second in the sixth inning.
Riley Kramolisch led SMSU at the plate going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Morgyn Otte (1-2) tossed a gem with a complete game shutout in the win. Otte allowed just one walk while striking out four.

MUSTANG EXTRA BASES
Riley Kramolisch leads SMSU batting .394 (13 for 33) at the plate with three RBIs and a walk.
Brynn Webber is batting .375 (9 for 24) and leads the Mustangs with a pair of triples and seven walks.
Abby Russell is batting .281 (9 for 32) including a double and two RBIs with three walks.
Lexi Ingalls leads the team with seven RBIs, picking up a pair of extra-base hits in the process.
Abby Boxrud has also drawn seven walks and recorded three RBIs.
• SMSU is averaging 2.5 runs per game and batting .246
Karlie Miller (2-3) leads the team with 19 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. Miller has posted a team-low 3.06 ERA in four complete games.
• SMSU has a team ERA of 4.24 in 66 innings with 48 strikeouts. Opponents are averaging 5.1 runs per game and batting .320

MUSTANGS EARN POSTSEASON HONORS IN 2024
• SMSU had two players receive accolades following the 2024 season.
• Right fielder, Abby Boxrud, and first baseman, Paris Van Dyke, were both selected to the All-NSIC Defensive team.
• Boxrud started every game in right field last season and led both SMSU and the NSIC with a 1.000 field pct. on 68 putouts.
• Van Dyke made 43 starts at first base finishing second in the league in fielding pct. (.997), fourth in fielding double plays (13), and ninth in putouts (305).

SMSU PICKED 10TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
• SMSU was chosen 10th in the 2025 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll as voted on by the leagues 15 head coaches.
• SMSU senior shortstop Abby Russell and senior pitcher Karlie Miller were both named "Players to Watch" in the conference this season.
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
• Southwest Minnesota State is in its 54th season of softball in 2025.
• SMSU has played in 2,070 games compiling an all-time record of 1,047-1,022-1.
• The Mustangs have won 10 NSIC regular season championships, two NSIC Tournament titles and has played in four NCAA Tournaments.
