SMSU softball opens NSIC tournament against Wayne State on Wednesday

LOOKING AHEAD 
• The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team (29-25), the No. 9 seed, will face off with No. 8 seed Wayne State (30-23) in the first round of the NSIC tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
• The Mustangs and Wildcats are set to square off on Wednesday, April 30, with first pitch at noon, at Bowden Softball Field

SMSU IN THE NSIC TOURNAMENT
• The Mustangs have won 10 NSIC regular season championships, two NSIC Tournament titles and have played in four NCAA Tournaments. 
• SMSU's last made the NSIC tournament in 2022, earning a first round win over Sioux Falls before falling in back-to-back games to Augustana and Minnesota Duluth.
• SMSU is 46-42 all-time in NSIC postseason play.

MILLER NAMED NSIC PITCHER OF THE WEEK 
Karlie Miller was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Week on March 10 following a stellar week in Florida. It is the first time Miller has earned the honor in her career. 
• Miller, a senior right-hander from Prior Lake, Minn., shined over the week going 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA in five appearances, recording 32 strikeouts in 28 innings and allowing just three earned runs at THE Spring Games. 
• In her first appearance of the trip on March 3, Miller tossed a four-hit complete game shutout against Pittsburgh Johnstown to help SMSU win its first game of the trip. 
• She followed that up with a shutout the next day, racking up a career-high 12 strikeouts in the 7-0 win over Staten Island (N.Y.). 
• Miller picked up another win on March 5, striking out five batters in 5 2/3 innings against West Virginia Wesleyan before ending the week with a six-strikeout performance in six innings versus Queens (N.Y.). 

HEAD COACH BAILEY BOUMAN 
Bailey Bouman is in her seventh season as head coach at SMSU with an overall record of 141-173, including 75-97 in NSIC play. 
• The 11th head coach in program history, Bouman was named to the position on Aug. 8, 2018. 
• SMSU finished with a 19-32 overall mark in 2024, missing the NSIC tournament by one game. Abby Boxrud and Paris Van Dyke became the first Mustangs to earn All-NSIC Defensive honors in the Bouman era. 
• The Mustangs finished the 2023 season 17-32 and missed the NSIC Tournament for the first time in three seasons.  
• SMSU finished 21-31 in 2022 and won its second NSIC Tournament game in consecutive seasons. 
• The Mustangs finished 27-20 in 2021, their best season since 2011, while winning their first NSIC tournament game since Bouman's first season in 2019. 
• SMSU finished 19-26 during her first season in 2019 and qualified for the NSIC Tournament. 
• Bouman was an assistant coach with the SMSU women's basketball program from 2015-17 and was also an assistant women's basketball coach at Dordt College (Iowa) before returning to SMSU. 
• Bouman is a 2014 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls where she played both basketball and softball for the Cougars. 

LAST TIME OUT 
• SMSU concluded the regular season with a pair of losses to Minnesota State at the MSU Softball Diamond on Sunday afternoon.
• The Mustangs fell 9-1 in five innings in the opener before suffering a 3-1 loss in game two. 
Karlie Miller (13-11) was given the loss in game one after allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks.
• SMSU recorded eight hits in game one, with Riley Kramolisch, Abby Boxrud, and Kaylee Hafermann each recording two.
Morgyn Otte (10-11) was tabbed with the game two loss after allowing one run on six hits while grabbing a pair of strikeouts in four innings. Jordyn Marsh tossed the final two innings, surrendering two unearned runs on just two hits, while also recording two strikeouts.4

MUSTANG EXTRA BASES 
Riley Kramolisch leads SMSU batting .354 with 21 RBI and 37 runs scored while ranking first on the team with 67 hits and total bases with 72. 
Abby Russell is hitting .333 with 28 RBI and six doubles while tying for first on the team with 72 total bases. 
Abby Boxrud is batting .311 and leads the team with 39 runs scored while batting in 13 runs. Boxrud ranks third in the nation and leads the NSIC in sacrifice bunts per game (0.43). 
Emma Humpal is hitting .309 with six extra-base hits and 29 RBI while drawing 11 nine walks. Humpal is sixth in the nation and first in the NSIC with six sacrifice flies. 
Lexi Ingalls leads the Mustangs with 13 extra-base hits. She has recorded 20 RBI and scored 19 runs. 
• SMSU is averaging 4.5 runs per game and batting .290 
Karlie Miller (13-11) leads the team with 100 strikeouts in 152 1/3 innings pitched. Miller has a 3.09 ERA with 16 complete games and three shutouts. 
Jordyn Marsh (6-3) has tallied 91 strikeouts in 87 innings. She is second in the nation and NSIC with 10 saves. 
• SMSU has a team ERA of 3.04 in 352 1/3 innings with 266 strikeouts. Opponents are averaging 3.9 runs per game and batting .266 

MUSTANGS IN THE RECORD BOOK 
• Senior Karlie Miller ranks third in team history in starts (95) and complete games (66), fourth in innings pitched (574) and strikeouts (380), seventh in shutouts (8), and eighth in wins (39). 
• Senior Abby Russell is second all-time in assists (456), fifth in hits (213), triples (10), and doubles (39), while ranking sixth in stolen base pct. (.939), seventh in total bases (296), eighth in stolen bases (31), ninth in runs scored (113), and 13th in RBI (91).  
• Sophomore Paris Van Dyke ranks first in all-time in fielding pct. (.992) and ranks ninth in putouts (627). 
• Freshman Jordyn Marsh is moving through the ranks quickly, already sitting second all-time in saves (10) and combined shutouts (4) while ranking third in games finished (32). 

SCOUTING WAYNE STATE
• SMSU is 38-31 all-time versus WSC and has won 11 of the previous 15 meetings in the series.
• The Mustangs were swept by the Wildcats earlier this season, 9-1 in five innings and 4-1, in Wayne, Neb.
• SMSU is 2-2 all-time against WSC in postseason play.
• The last postseason meeting between the teams happened on May 2, 2009, resulting in a 1-0 victory for SMSU in the NSIC semifinals.

MUSTANGS EARN POSTSEASON HONORS IN 2024 
• SMSU had two players receive accolades following the 2024 season. 
• Right fielder, Abby Boxrud, and first baseman, Paris Van Dyke, were both selected to the All-NSIC Defensive team. 
• Boxrud started every game in right field last season and led both SMSU and the NSIC with a 1.000 field pct. on 68 putouts. 
• Van Dyke made 43 starts at first base finishing second in the league in fielding pct. (.997), fourth in fielding double plays (13), and ninth in putouts (305). 

SMSU PICKED 10TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL 
• SMSU was chosen 10th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll as voted on by the league's 15 head coaches. 
• SMSU senior shortstop Abby Russell and senior pitcher Karlie Miller were both named "Players to Watch" in the conference this season. 

MUSTANG HISTORY 
• Southwest Minnesota State is in its 54th season of softball in 2025. 
• SMSU has played in 2,114 games, compiling an all-time record of 1,073-1,040-1. 
• The Mustangs have won 10 NSIC regular season championships, two NSIC Tournament titles and have played in four NCAA Tournaments.
