Box Score vs. Caldwell (N.J.)
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team fell to Wayne State (Mich.) 1-0 in nine innings on Sunday morning at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., but rebounded with a 9-8 victory over Caldwell (N.J.) in its second game of the day.
In a low scoring affair against WSU, SMSU managed four hits in the contest;
Jessica Paczosa went 2 for 4 in a game in which the Mustangs failed to get on the board.
The game was scoreless after seven innings, and it wasn't until the ninth inning that the 0-0 tie was finally broken as WSU used a sacrifice fly to win the game.
Amanda Johnson suffered the loss for SMSU.
In game two, SMSU jumped to an early 3-0 lead before Caldwell scored eight unanswered run to take an 8-3 lead into the sixth inning. The Mustangs then rallied in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to cut the lead to 8-6 heading into the seventh inning.
In the seventh, SMSU scored three runs to stun Caldwell and earn the victory.
Meaghan Laetsch cracked a two-run double to tie the game at 8-8 then scored the game-winning run on an error by Caldwell.
Amanda Burkhart and Paczosa each finished with three hits to lead the Mustang offense.
Nicole Kelley picked up her first win of the season on the mound for SMSU.
SMSU, 6-8 overall, will play two more games on Monday, taking on UMASS-Lowell and Wayne State (Mich.)
