SMSU Ready for Weekend Full of Play, NSIC Match-ups

MARSHALL, Minn.
- After more than a week off, the Southwest Minnesota State tennis team (2-5, 0-3 NSIC) will travel to St. Peter on Saturday to take on Gustavus Adolphus (13-7) at 9:30 a.m. The Mustangs compete in Northern Sun conference play Sunday in St. Cloud against Northern State (1-4, 1-2 NSIC) at 2 p.m. and St. Cloud State (10-3, 3-0 NSIC) at 5 p.m.

Series records
: SMSU first competed against Gustavus in 1982. Gustavus is leading the series with a 3-15 all-time record against the Mustangs, who are currently riding a four-match losing streak in the series.  St. Cloud and SMSU began their series 31 years ago in 1979 and have met 28 times. The Mustangs have won five of those match ups against the Huskies. SMSU has dominated Northern State since first playing the team in 1980. The Mustangs have won all 11 contests against the Wolves.

Last time out: The Mustangs have not played for more than a week when they took on MSU Moorhead in St. Cloud on March 7. SMSU forced four match tie-breakers against MSUM on Sunday but were only able to capitalize on one, losing the contest 5-4. Angie Wiegmann (Spicer, Minn.) was the only player from SMSU to win her tie-breaker match, defeating Ashley Taborsky 6-3, 2-6, 11-9. Danielle Hildebrandt (St. James, Minn.) also recorded a win over Kathryn Neubauer from the No. 2 singles spot, winning 6-1, 6-0.

SMSU ranked in Central Region:
SMSU is ranked ninth in the ITA Central Rankings as of the end of March 2. Other teams from the NSIC placing in the Central region include Upper Iowa (No. 3), Minnesota State (No. 5), St. Cloud State (No.  6) and Winona State (No.7).

Grupe ranked in Central Region: 
Junior Cailey Grupe is ranked No. 15 in the ITA Central Rankings in singles.  Grupe finished last season with a 15-11 record in singles play.  She has charted a 5-5 record in singles play this season.

Senior momentum: 
The 2010 roster features two senior in Danielle Hildebrandt (St. James, Minn.) and Amy Daniels (Marshall, Minn.).  The two have been mainstays in the SMSU lineup throughout their careers, making waves in both singles and doubles play.

The coach: 
The longest tenured coach currently on staff at SMSU, George Seldat enters his 16th season as head tennis coach of the Mustangs in 2010. Seldat has compiled a 78-150 overall record at SMSU.  Last season, he coached the Mustangs an overall record of 8-14 and 5-6 mark in the NSIC.
