BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team falls to 2-1 in dual matches on the season after a 20-18 loss at NCAA Division I South Dakota State University on Friday night in Brookings, S.D. SDSU improves to 3-2 in dual matches as the Jackrabbits defeated Northern State 25-18 prior to their match with SMSU.
The Jacks' grabbed a 3-0 lead with Aaron Pickrel picking up a 6-2 decision over
Travis Borchert at 125 pounds. The Mustangs benefitted from an open weight class at 133 pounds and
Justin Reinsma earned a victory by forfeit to give SMSU a 6-3 lead.
Dustin Walraven then defeated SMSU's
Ethan Hildebrandt in a 13-3 major decision to give SDSU a 7-6 lead.
Codie Lane then lost a tight bout (11-10) at 149 pounds to Andrew Youngblom and the Jacks' took a 10-6 lead.
SDSU won the next three bouts before
Micah Larson earned a win by medical forfeit at 184 pounds to make the score 20-12 in favor of the Jacks'.
Martin Hagen followed that with an 11-6 decision over Nick Mart to come within five at 20-15.
Cole Wilson then scrapped out a 7-5 decision in the heavyweight bout and the Mustangs came up just short falling 20-18 to South Dakota State.
Southwest Minnesota State will take time off over the holiday break before returning to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11, hosting a triangular meet against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) and Waldorf (Iowa) beginning at 4 p.m.
