MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team (2-9, 2-5 NSIC) will travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on Minnesota, Crookston (2-5, 0-4 NSIC) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tennis action at 8 a.m. at the Center Court Fitness Center on Sunday.
About Southwest Minnesota State: The Mustangs enter the contest with a record of 2-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play. SMSU has lost six straight dual matches since defeating Bemidji State 5-4 on Feb. 19.
Cailey Grupe (No. 1 singles) and
Trisha Baldwin (No. 2 singles) both enter the match with a 4-7 record on the season.
Angie Wiegmann has compiled a record of 3-8 at No. 3 singles for the Mustangs. Grupe and Baldwin have combined for a 6-5 record at No. 1 singles. Wiegmann and
Kasey Uran have recorded a record of 3-8 at No 2 singles.
About Minnesota, Crookston: The Golden Eagles enter the match with a record of 2-5 on the season, including 0-4 in NSIC play. UMC is coming off an 8-1 win over North Central University on March 4. Katelyn Johnson (No. 1 singles) and Cassie Jarvis (No. 2 singles) both enter the match with a record of 1-5 on the season.
The series: Southwest Minnesota State has never lost to Minnesota, Crookston. The two teams have met seven times since the 2000 season with the Mustangs winning all seven meetings.
Fall competition: Southwest Minnesota State competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Tournament earlier this season in Denver, Colo.
Trisha Baldwin and
Cailey Grupe advanced to the second round of doubles action in the tournament. The pair defeated Augustana's Liz Lewis and Emily Johnson, 8-2, in the first round before falling to Upper Iowa's Courtney Romer and Anastasia Dabiza, 8-5, in the second.
Senior leadership: Cailey Grupe and
Trisha Baldwin returns as the top doubles tandem for SMSU. Grupe finished the 2010 season with a singles record of 13-9 and a doubles record of 15-7. Baldwin was 16-5 in singles matches while contributing to the 15-7 record with Grupe. Baldwin has compiled a 40-36 career record at SMSU and Baldwin owns a career record of 45-42 in three seasons.
The coach: Charlie Kost enters his first season as head coach of the women's tennis program at Southwest Minnesota State. Kost takes over the reigns from
George Seldat, who retired after 16 seasons as head coach. Kost comes to SMSU after having spent eight seasons (2002-10) as the head girls' tennis coach at Marshall High School.
