Kyle Young has been named to the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball All-NSIC first team, while sophomore designated hitter
Steven Kremer was named to the All-NSIC second team. The league office in Burnsville, Minn., made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.
Young is the first SMSU player since pitcher Adam Schrader in 2010 to earn first team All-NSIC accolades.
A native of Scandia, Minn., and a 2009 graduate of Forest Lake High School, Young started 40 of 41 games and led SMSU in both batting average (.384) and slugging percentage (.580), while collecting a team-high 15 doubles. He also tied for the team lead in both home runs with four and walks with 18, while ranking second with 27 RBIs. He racked up a team-high 16 multi-hit games and had six multi-RBI games.
In the final NSIC statistics (conference games only), Young finished fourth in doubles (10), sixth in total bases (56), ninth in batting average (.420), ninth in slugging percentage (.691), 10th in on-base percentage (.484), 10th in base hits (34), 11th in RBIs (22) and 15th in home runs (4).
Young concluded his two-year career batting .318 with 21 doubles, five home runs, three triples, 49 runs scored and 46 RBIs.
Kremer, a native of Wilmont, Minn., and 2010 graduate of Worthington High School, played in 35 games with 29 starts and finished second on the team with a .374 batting average and second with 13 doubles. He also ranked second in slugging percentage (.566) and fourth in RBIs (22).
In the final NSIC statistics, Kremer ranked 12th in the league in batting average (.406), 14th in on-base percentage (.467) and 16th in slugging percentage (.609).
Minnesota Duluth's Alex Wojciechowski was named NSIC's Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while Minnesota State's Harvey Martin was named Pitcher of the Year. Upper Iowa's Martin Valdez was tabbed Newcomer of the Year, while Tim Bellew was voted by his peers as Coach of the Year.
Southwest Minnesota State University is a member of NCAA Division II and is located in Marshall. SMSU finished the 2013 season 17-23-1 overall, including 11-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, finishing one game out of qualifying for the NSIC tournament.
