MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will resume non-conference action this weekend as it heads to the Wisconsin-Lacrosse Duals in La Crosse, Wis. The Mustangs will face Wisconsin-La Crosse starting at 9 a.m., before playing Wartburg (Iowa) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
WISCONSIN-LA CROSSESMSU will face Wisconsin-La Crosse for the fifth time in program history as UWL defeated the Mustangs 30-15 last season at the Duals. The Eagles hold a 4-0 record against SMSU in the series that started back in the 1967-68 season.
WARTBURGSMSU will face Wartburg (Iowa) for the third time on Saturday with the series tied 1-1. The Mustangs won the first dual of the series back in the 1995-96 season, but suffered a loss in 2002-03.
WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRESouthwest Minnesota State will face Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the fifth time in program history as SMSU defeated WEC last season 40-8 last season at the Duals. The Mustangs hold a 4-0 record in the series that started back in the 2002-03 season.
LAST TIME OUTThe SMSU wrestling team placed eight wrestlers at the 2015 Augsburg College Auggie-Adidas Open wrestling tournament on Nov. 21.
Antonio Meikel placed sixth in the 133 pound gold bracket to start the placing for the Mustangs.
Justin Haneke tied for third in the 141 gold bracket.
Cortez Arredondo earned consolation champ at 149 pounds. In the 157 pound bronze bracket,
Cody Heitman grabbed first place, while
Colton Stoddard finished fourth. At 174 pound gold bracket,
Griffin Osing finished fifth.
Brody Goens grabbed sixth place in the 184 gold bracket.
Cole Wilson finished a team-best second place in the heavyweight gold.
WISCONSIN-LA CROSSE DUALSThe Mustangs will compete in the Wisconsin-La Crosse Duals for the third consecutive season and hold a 4-2 record in the Duals. SMSU's two losses come from the hand of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
RANKEDSMSU is ranked 11th in this week's Division II Wrestling Coaches' Poll – Super Region III.
Cole Wilson is the lone Mustang ranked in the poll at 285 pounds. The senior is ranked third in this weeks' poll and is carrying a 9-2 record so far this season.
