FAYETTE, Iowa- Southwest Minnesota State returned to its NSIC dual schedule at Upper Iowa and overcame early struggles to get within six team points with two weight classes remaining, but the Peacocks, who had two wins by fall on the night, came away with a 25-13 win at home on Thursday night in the Dorman Gymnasium.
After Upper Iowa took the first two bouts of the match including one by major decision, the Mustangs got on the board with a 16-3 major decision win for
Trent Butcher (6-8) at 141.
Damian Penichet helped Upper Iowa rebound with a pin at 149 to put the Peacocks ahead, 13-4.
Cortez Arredondo (15-6) edged out Mac Spotts in a 2-1 decision at 157 which was followed by another close 8-7 win by decision for
Kegen Fingalsen (10-11), bringing SMSU to within three.
SMSU then suffered another loss by fall but
Cole Hennen (10-7) kept the Mustangs alive with an 8-2 win by decision that cut the UIU lead to, 19-13 with two weight classes remaining.
Wrestling at 197, Nick Baumler of Upper Iowa improved his season record to 26-7 and clinched the win for the Peacocks who went ahead, 22-13.
Triston Westerlund earned another decision for the Peacocks at 285 to give Upper Iowa the 25-13 win.
The Mustangs will return to its conference duals next weekend as they host U-Mary on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a match against Minot State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
