MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams had a strong showing on Wednesday competing at the Maverick Open hosted by Minnesota State University with several first-place finishes and numerous school records.
For the Mustang women's team,
Isatu Shirek captured first-place in the 200 meters with a time of 25.84 with teammate
Sierra Clifford crossing in second place at 25.99. Clifford also ran in the 400 meters where she placed fifth overall at 59.06.
Shirek set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a second-place time of 14.29.
Shealyn Tom also put her name atop the school record book with a mark of 3.43m in the pole vault to place third overall. Teammate
Makenna Glanzer was fifth with a mark of 2.83m.
Macie Langstraat crossed the line in the 800 meters at 2:31.81 to earn second place.
Stella Anderson placed third in the 100 meters at 12.72 with
Lexy Gilbert finishing in fourth place at 13.02.
Morgan Hughes closed at 45.02m in the hammer throw to pick-up a seventh-place finish.
Kate Battaforyen earned seventh place in the shot put with a mark of 12.50m.
On the men's side,
Isaiah Nelson captured first in the triple jump at 13.55m and was seventh in the long jump at 6.86m.
Junior Kandolo had a solid day in the long jump earning fifth place at 6.97m, while
Hunter Smith cleared a height of 4.17m in the pole vault to earn fourth place.
Max Schmitt ran 56.41 to finish fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, while
Nathan Lear crossed at 57.45 to place sixth.
Deekon Anvid came through with a strong showing in the discus at 44.79 to place fifth.
Noah Eckelberg had a big day setting school marks in the wheelchair 100 meters (15.51) and 400 meters (53.43).
SMSU will return to Mankato on Friday competing at the Deb Schulz Open hosted by Minnesota State. It's the final meet for the Mustangs prior to the NSIC Championships on May 12-14.
