BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University track & field teams opened its season on Friday competing at the South Dakota State Holiday Open & Multi inside the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
Tyler Smith had a big day for the Mustangs as he won the 300-meters with a school record time of 34.43. He broke the previous record set back in 1990 at 35.34 set by Walter Sutton. Smith's previous best in the event was 35.99 set last season.
Peda Zeba, in his first collegiate meet, finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 13.30m.
Hunter Smith cleared 4.25m in the pole vault to finish 10
th, while
Carl Swedzinski earned 12
th place in the shot put with a mark of 14.62m.
Macie Langstraat had a strong day for the women's team placing second in the 1-mile with a time of 5:24.26, while
Nadia Sanford picked-up a third place finish in the shot put 13.35m.
Sierra Clifford ran 1:38.29 in the 600 meters to place sixth, while teammate
Madison Marco running 10:36.52 in the 3,000-meter to finish seventh.
Shealyn Tom had the second best mark among Division II athletes in the pole vault finishing in seventh overall at 3.35m.
Brycelyn Hanson earned a seventh place finish in the 400-meters with a time of 1:05.31.
SMSU returns to action on Jan. 20, 2024, at the Ole Open in Northfield, Minn.
