MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's and men's track & field teams set or tied five schools records competing at the Maverick Open #1 hosted by Minnesota State on Wednesday.
For the women's team,
Christine Sleeter tied the school record in the high jump that was in place for 40 years with a height of 1.68m to finish third overall.
Rainbow Stands finished in fourth place clearing the bar at 1.63m.
Madison Marco crushed her school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by 12 seconds finishing with a time of 11:20.81.
Sierra Clifford broke her own school record in the 400 meters with a winning time of 56.14. Her previous school record was 57.01 set in 2023. Teammate
Ella Doble ran a personal best 57.98 to finish fourth in the event.
Clifford ran 25.20 to finish third in the 200 meters with Doble placing seventh with a personal best 25.36.
SMSU's 4x100 relay of
Michelle Marquard, Doble,
Lexy Gilbert and Clifford broke a 10-year school record with a time of 48.10.
Macie Langstraat ran a season best 2:20.88 to finish third in the 800 meters with
Kyra Kusnierek running 2:24.90 to finish seventh.
Jada Backes crossed the line at 1:08.85 in the 400-meter hurdles to place sixth.
On the men's side,
Tyler Smith ran a first-place time of 48.02 in the 400 meters to break his own school record of 48.22 set earlier this season. He also ran 21.60 in the 200 meters finishing fifth.
Dylan Schwarz finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.69.
Jacob Kunkel cleared 1.96m to win the high jump with
McKallen Smith placing fourth at 1.86m.
Logan Roelofs finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:29.65.
Max Schmitt set a season best in the 400-meter hurdles with a second place time of 53.54.
Peda Zeba set a personal best in the triple jump with a distance of 14.27m to finish second overall. The mark is the third best in team history. Teammate
Colton Johnson placed third at 13.41m.
Deekon Anvid placed third in the discus at 50.78m, while
Tyler Nebelung finished in sixth at 48.57m.
Cody Evers ran a personal best 15.17 in the 110-meter hurdles placing third overall.
Greg Schafer finished fifth in the 100 meters at 11.19, while
Jack Clark was sixth at 11.35.
Clark also competed in the javelin and set a season best 43.92m to finish fifth.
SMSU will return to Mankato on Friday for the Maverick Open #2. The meet is the last for the Mustangs prior to the NSIC Championships on May 8-10 in Duluth, Minn.
