FAYETTE, Iowa – Keenan Wenzel drilled a two-out walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to give SMSU a dramatic 3-2 victory over Upper Iowa in game one of a NSIC doubleheader at Robertson Woods Field.
UIU scored two runs in the top of the second inning off SMSU starting pitcher
Ryan Chmielewski, taking advantage of three walks and collecting two hits.
Chmielewski was able to rebound and tossed five innings, allowed three hits and six walks, but struck out seven.
SMSU scored a single run in the second on a sac fly by
Caleb Gardow and then tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double by
Isaac Nett.
UIU had chances to regain the lead in both the sixth and seventh innings, but left two runners on base in both frames. The Peacocks finished the game stranding 11 runners on base.
Brady Brosz earned the win in relief as he tossed two scoreless innings with one strikeout and two walks.
Hayden Molva and
Kobe Lovell each pitched in relief as well for the Mustangs.
