ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling program opened the 2024-25 season on Saturday with five place winners at the Yellowjacket Open hosted by Rochester Community & Technical College.
 
"Today was a great day for SMSU wrestling!" said SMSU head coach Chayse Jackson. "For a lot of guys, this was their first college matches. We learned a lot, won a lot, and grew together as a program. I am proud of their effort in every match as we fought from whistle to whistle. I am super pumped for the future of this team and these guys. The only way is up!"
 
SMSU had 16 individuals competing in the freshman/sophomore bracket on Saturday. Mason Buss earned a fourth place finish at 174 earning three victories, including a pair by fall.
 
Dylan Louwagie finished the day with a 5-1 mark to place sixth at 141. He reached his limit of six matches on the day and was not able to compete for fifth place.  
 
Noah Torgerson (unattached) picked up four victories to place fifth at 174, while Jacob Taplin (unattched) and Jonah Anderson (unattached) both finished sixth. Taplin finished 3-2 at 157, with Anderson closing with a 4-2 mark at 184.
 
In total, SMSU won 43 matches with 13 via fall and four more via technical fall.
 
SMSU continues competition next Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D.
