MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team had several underclassmen compete on Saturday with a total of six place-winners, including a first and second place finish at the Dragon Open hosted by MSU Moorhead inside Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The Mustangs closed the meet recording a total of 21 victories, including four falls, four techs and three majors.
Jonah Anderson earned first-place in the White Division at 184 pounds with a 3-0 mark including a win by tech fall in the quarterfinals and a win by fall at 6:57 over Gabrieal Shatskikh from St. John's in the finals.
Tate Condezo won by fall and won a pair of major decisions to advance to the finals in the White Division at 157 before dropping a 12-6 decision in the finals to Patrick Kubisa from St. Cloud State.
Noah Jensen placed fourth in the White Division at 174 closing with three victories, including one by major decision and another by tech fall.
Carter Paulson rallied to win his final match of the day to finish fifth in the White Division at 197, while
Gavin Lambert (125) and
Cade Lierman (149) both finished in sixth place in the White Division. Lierman won his first two match of the day via fall and decision.
"Great tournament showing this weekend from quite a few guys," said SMSU head coach
Chayse Jackson. "We have had a wild week with our home opener, so to see a lot of young guys come out and perform at a high level is super exciting. A ton of placers and a lot of good! Next up…the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis."
SMSU will now head to Indianapolis next Saturday and Sunday to compete at the Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
