DES MOINES, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State women's and men's track & field teams had several athletes competing on Friday and Saturday at both the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Simpson College Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa, on Friday.
At the Drake Relays on Friday, the women's 4x200 relay of
Taytum Klink,
Sierra Clifford,
Lexy Gilbert,
Emily Van Roekel set a school record at 1:45.34 to finish 24
th, while the sprint medley relay of Klink, Gilbert, Clifford and
Macie Langstraat won its head with the second fastest time in program history to place ninth overall at 4:11.81.
The 4x400 relay of Clifford,
Ella Doble, Langstraat and
Hannah Koepfinger also ran on Friday and finished 27
th at 4:04.08, while the 4x100 relay did not finish.
On Saturday morning, SMSU's distance medley team of Langstraat, Koepfinger,
Kyra Kusnierek and
Madison Marco ran 12:53.81 to place 12
th.
For the men's team at the Drake Relays on Friday,
Max Schmitt ran 53.91 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish 18
th out of more than 30 athletes. The men's sprint medley relay of
Greg Schafer, Schmitt,
Tyler Smith and
Roel Palomo placed 15
th overall with a time of 3:35.03.
At Simpson on Friday, SMSU's 4x100 relay of Smith, Schmitt,
Peda Zeba and Schafer took home first place with a time of 42.52, while Zeba recorded a seventh place finish in the triple jump at 13.81m.
SMSU continues action with two meets in Mankato next week. The Mustangs first will compete at the Maverick Open #1 on Wednesday and the Maverick Open #2 on Saturday.
