MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team defeated the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans on Thursday evening by a final score of 31-11.
SMSU, earning its first dual victory since Nov. 16, moves to 3-3 on the season.
The dual began with NIACC forfeiting the 125, 133, and 141-pound matches due to weight complications, giving SMSU an 18-0 lead to start the dual.
149 pounds featured
Chance Burns for the Mustangs in his first career start. Burns would have his way with McKenley Charelus, dominating the usual 141-pounder in a 21-2 tech fall in the third period.
NIACC would turn the tables on SMSU, winning 157 and 165 both by decision to cut the deficit to 23-5.
Mason Buss represented SMSU at 174 pounds versus Jonathan Krogman. Buss began the bout with a takedown to take a 3-0 lead early and kept adding to his lead to hold a 14-1 advantage after one period. Krogman would attempt a comeback but would have too little effort, as Buss cruised his way to a 17-1 tech fall in the second period. SMSU led 28-5.
At 184,
Adam Sylvester battled for the Mustangs on his way to a sudden victory win over No. 2-ranked Jessey Colas. Trailing 4-1 in the third period, Sylvester hooked Colas' leg and flipped him for a takedown with just under 30 seconds remaining to tie the match.
Sylvester secured the takedown for the win just 20 seconds into the first overtime period.
Kody Marschner went head-to-head with No. 9-ranked MaCray Klohs. Klohs answered every shot fired by Marschner, holding him to just one point in the 7-1 decision victory. NIACC inched closer to a 31-8 deficit.
At 285 pounds,
Evan Thompson trailed Xander Kenworthy early but held on to a close battle in the third period. Kenworthy would hold on and score a takedown on Thompson in the closing seconds of the bout to earn a 5-2 win via decision to close the dual.
"Alumni night turned out to have some fireworks! A lot of great wrestling tonight with a big upset for one of our seniors and one of our young guys getting a win in his first start," said SMSU head coach
Chayse Jackson. "While we came out on top, there are still many adjustments to make to be ready for next week. This was a tune-up that we really needed that provided a good opportunity to showcase our skills in front of some alumni. Looking forward to hosting our first dual tournament next week!"
SMSU returns to the mat next Saturday, Jan. 18, hosting a five-team dual tournament. The first round will begin at noon, and Minot State, Fort Hays State, Upper Iowa, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire will compete.
