MARSHALL, MINN.: The No. 8 ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs earned a 2-1 victory over Bemidji State in the first round of the NSIC Tournament held in Marshall, Minn. on Saturday, May 3.
SMSU scored its first run of the game in the second inning.
Amanda Tucci lead off the inning with a single to left field which was followed by an
Amanda Opatz double. With runners on second and third,
Kristin Braden singled through the right side to score SMSU's first run.
Bemidji State tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning with a homer to left center.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Kiley Petersen's double, which hit off the top of center field fence and stayed in the park, scored the
Amanda Burkhart who reached on a base hit earlier in the inning.
Amanda Opatz led the offense as she was 2-for-3.
Sara Silke earned the win on the mound as she pitched five innings with four strikeouts.
Amanda Johnson got her fifth save of the season as she pitched two innings while recording four strikeouts.
The Mustangs advanced to play Concordia St. Paul in the second round. SMSU is 36-8 overall while BSU fell to 6-22 overall.
