BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams had a strong two days at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Complex. The two teams broke nine school records during the two-day event.
On Saturday,
Will Hanson led the men's squad taking home second place in the 60 meters with a time of 8.15.
Raphael Lawson-Gayle earned a sixth place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.91m
Hannah Palmeter helped pace the women's team, breaking her own school record in mile crossing the finish line in 5:06.83 to finish fifth out of 68 runners. She also broke the school record in the 5,000 meters finishing in 16
th place with a time of 18:13.99.
Eisha Oden recorded a 15
th place finish out of 116 runners in the 400 meters with a school record-breaking time of 58.0.
Kristen Weber also put her name in the record book with a time of 1:42.87 in the 600 meters to finish 22
nd out of 37.
The SMSU women's 4x400 relay team of
Ellen Padmore, Oden, Palmeter and
Nikki Atwood, finished 11
th out of 22 teams with a school best time of 4:02.07.
Rylee Armstrong also had big day with a school best triple jump of 11.5m to place sixth out of 45.
During the opening day on Friday, the SMSU teams combined to break five school records.
Kim Shabino broke the school record in the 200 meters with a time of 25.62 to place 20
th out of 116 runners.
Kristen Weber also came through with a school record-breaking time in the 600 meters crossing the line in 1:42.87 to place 22
nd.
Armstrong broke her own school record in the long jump with a mark of 5.32m to finish in 17
th place out of 55 competitors.
Also on Friday,
Evan Bonneson came through for the men's team with a 40
th place finish in the 5,000 meter run with a school record time of 15:49.32.
Both Southwest Minnesota State squads return to Brookings next Friday, Feb. 19, for the South Dakota State Tune Up. It will be SMSU's final meet before competing at the NSIC Championships in Mankato, Minn., on Feb. 26-27.
