SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams completed day one of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships on Friday with the teams combining for 11 points, while several individuals had strong days and have advanced to Saturday's finals.
 
The two-day meet is being hosted by Augustana University and held at Howard Wood Field.
 
The SMSU men's team recorded 10 points and is currently in 10th place, while the women's team has one team point and is in 13th place.
 
On the men's side, Alex Weis earned SMSU's first team points of the championship with a fourth place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.22 meters.
 
Will Hanson also earned SMSU five points with a fourth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 48.78 meters.
 
Ben Ryan advanced to tomorrow's finals in both the 100 and 200 meters. He ran a 10.86 time in the 100 meters and a 21.88 in the 200 meters.
 
For the women's team, Rylee Armstrong recorded an eighth place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.49 meters to earn SMSU its one team point.
 
Kim Shabino advanced to the finals in both the 100 and 200. She ran a time of 12.19 in the 100 to win her heat and the finished with a time of 25.11 in the 200.
 
Hannah Palmeter will also run in tomorrow's final of the 800 meters after winning her heat with a time of 2:18.44. She will also run the 1,500 meters after recording the best time on Friday crossing the finish line at 4:50.60.
 
Eisha Oden will run in the finals of the 400 meters after qualifying with a time of 59.04 on Friday.
 
The final day of the championships will begin at 11 a.m.
