MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State Esports team faced off Wednesday night with its Valorant Team taking two losses against Cornell College. 
 
SMSU's began the night by suffering a 13-6 loss on the first map against Cornell and then falling 13-4 on the second map. 
 
On the first map, SMSU kept pace with Cornell having Jackson Vierstraete (jAFFr0) place in the top five having 19 kills 16 deaths and getting an avg. combat score of 285. Cornell filled out the remainder of the top five on the leader board with ravioliman69 taking the number one spot with 22 kills, 11 deaths, and a combat score of 309. Nicholas Polfliet (BigZoomerEnergy) finished right outside the top five on the leaderboard, he was able to secure two of the four first bloods for SMSU on the first map, the other two coming from Brandon Lyons (Wookie Wook). Cornell secured the first map victory with a 13-6 score. 
 
For the second map, SMSU filled out two of the top five leader board positions with Polfliet finishing third with 13 deaths, 15 deaths and lead SMSU in first bloods with three. The other position was filled by Vierstraete taking fifth on the leaderboard with 10 kills, 13 deaths, and a combat score of 174. 
 
For Cornell ravioliman69 again took the top spot finishing with 21 kills, 10 deaths, and having the only defuse on the second map. SMSU finished the second and final map of the night down 13-4. 
 
SMSU will be back in action Friday, Oct. 16, facing off against Milwaukee School of Engineering in Super Smash Bros Ultimate competition. 
 
The Valorant Team will face off against Shawnee State University next Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
