MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State eSports program has been competing in its fifth season under head coach
Spencer Louwagie. The eSports program is divided up into various teams, games and leagues. Here is where the program stands in different games for the fall season.
Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) - NECC (Best of three series)
The Mustang Counter-Strike team has been competing in the NECC league this fall and is currently fourth in the 'Group F' standings with a record of 2-3 in series and 5-7 in individual games. The CS2 team started the season with a closely contested 2-1 win over Missouri S&T led by
Yenghoua Kue, who posted a 1.57 kill/death ratio (K/D) with a team-high 69 total kills. SMSU followed with a 2-1 loss to Drexel before coming back with dominant 2-0 win over Mississippi State on Oct. 9, once again led by Kue with a 3.00 K/D.
The Mustangs play their final series of the season versus Illinois-Springfield on Nov. 6, starting at 6 p.m.
League of Legends (LoL) - NECC (Best of three series)
The SMSU League of Legends team is also competing in the NECC and is currently fourth in the 'Division VI' standings with a record of 2-3 in series and 5-6 in individual games. The LoL team earned its first win on Oct. 8 with a 2-0 sweep over Mississippi State. Its second win came by way of forfeit versus North Dakota.
The LoL team will play its final series of the season against Texas Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with first game scheduled for 7 p.m.
Overwatch - NECC (Best of five series)
The Mustang Overwatch team also competes in the NECC, and currently sits second in the 'Division VIII' standings with a record of 3-1 in series and 9-6 in individual games. The Overwatch team got its first win on Oct. 4, battling Coe College to the fifth game and coming out victorious. Its second win came by way of forfeit versus Missouri S&T. SMSU picked up its third victory with a 3-1 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Oct. 11.
SMSU plays Marquette (Mich.) and Missouri State on Nov. 1, before rounding out its season with a match against Northern Iowa on Nov. 8.
Valorant Brown - NECC (Best of three series)
The Mustang Valorant Brown squad competes in the NECC as well and is tied for second in the 'Division IX' standings with a record of 4-2 in series and 8-4 in individual games. SMSU earned its first "true win" over Wisconsin-Eau Claire 2-0 on Oct. 7, led by
Hudson Ayres with a series-high 39 kills and team-high 15 kill assists. The Mustangs' other "true win" came on Oct. 24 with a decisive 2-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State, with
Alex Forseman picking up a series-high 43 kills with 13 kill assists. The other two wins came by way of forfeit.
Valorant Brown plays its final series of the season on Nov. 4, competing against Saint Vincent at 6 p.m.
Valorant Gold - NECC (Best of three series)
The Mustang Valorant Gold squad competes in the NECC as well and is sixth in the 'Division VII' standings with a record of 1-4 in series and 5-9 in individual games. SMSU's lone victory came on Oct. 28 with a 2-1 win versus Tenessee-Knoxville.
Kennedy Kucera recorded a team-high 53 kills with 18 kill assists to lead the Mustangs.Â
Valorant Gold plays a series against Texas Christian on Oct. 31, before wrapping up the season with a series versus North Georgia on Nov. 4.
