WAYNE, Neb. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's cross-country team placed second, while the men's team finished in fifth place at the five-team Wildcat Classic hosted by Wayne State College on Friday at the Wayne Country Club.
Catherine Ihrke led the Mustang women's team with an 15th place finish covering the 5K race in 21:15, while teammate
Kyra Kusnierek ran 21:43 to finish 17th overall.
Natalie Jorschumb crossed the line in 18th overall with a time of 21:53 with teammates
Macie Langstraat (21:56),
Savanna Busch (22:02) and
Josephine Lentz (22:16) finishing behind in 19th, 21st and 24th place respectively.
The SMSU women's team closed the race recording 60 points. Augustana won the team title with 15 points with Wayne State placing third with 68 points. Nicolette Schmidt of Augustana won the individual title with a time of 18:06.
In the men's race, SMSU was led by
Brayden Tofteland, who finished 25th overall in the 8K race with a time of 28:17.
SMSU's
John Ziemkowski ran 28:49 to place 28th overall, while
Daniel Olson (31:52),
Michael Boyd (35:44), and
Ryan Russek (36:30) finished together in 34
th, 35
th, and 36
th, respectively.
The Mustang men finished the race with 130 points. Augustana won the men's title with 15 points followed by Wayne State at 65 points. Colten Brand from Augustana won the individual title with a time of 25:40.
Both SMSU teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, competing at the Dordt College Invite at the Defenders Cross Country Course in Sioux Center, Iowa.
