MANKATO, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams put together a strong showing on Friday competing at the Ted Nelson Classic hosted by Minnesota State University.
Tyler Smith continued his fine indoor season setting a school record for the second straight week. After setting the school mark in the 500 meters last week, Smith ran a school best 49.55 in the 400 meters to finish second overall.
Tyler Nebelung set a personal best and the third longest in program history with a toss of 18.12m in the weight throw to finish second. He also placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 15.01m.
Greg Schafer earned a spot in the 60-meter finals and ran a personal best 6.99 to finish third overall.
Jacob Kunkel earned a second-place finish in the high jump tying his own school record at 1.98m, while teammate
Ryan Kronbach finished third at 1.93m.
Roel Palomo ran 1:59.55 in the 800 meters to earn second place, while
Cody Evers advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and finished sixth at 8.62.
Peda Zeba carded a mark of 13.15m in the triple jump to place third overall.
For the SMSU women's team,
Nadia Sanford recorded a toss of 13.07m in the shot put to earn second place, while finishing fifth in the weight throw at 15.94.
Emily Lorentz earned seventh place in the weight throw at 14.98m.
Sierra Clifford picked up a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 58.95.
Macie Langstraat ran 3:06.90 in the 1,000 meters to finish fifth.
Brooke Wetterstrom finished sixth in the 600 meters at 1:43.27, while
Madison Marco also finished sixth in the 3,000 meters at 10:31.71.
Christine Sleeter and
Rainbow Stands each recorded marks of 1.61m in the high jump to earn top five finishes.
SMSU returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 15, at the SJU/St. Ben's Invite in Collegeville, Minn.
