1994 Team
The 1993 and 1994
SMSU softball teams were the most dominate teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and helped propel the program into a consistent winner not only in conference play, but regionally as well.
The teams won back-to-back NSIC championships with 10-0 marks and were a major part of a stretch in which SMSU won 27 straight conference games from 1992 to 1995.
The 1993 team, under the direction of head coach Marilyn Strate, won a school record 39 games and closed the season with a 39-12 overall record. The 1993 team won a school record 17 straight games and ranked 18th in the final NAIA national poll. The 1993 pitching staff ranked 17th in NAIA with a 1.43 ERA.
Deb Denbeck took over as interim head coach in 1994 and helped guide the squad to a 32-16 overall mark. The 32 victories at-the-time were the second most in team history, while the pitching staff ranked eighth in NAIA with a 1.42 ERA. The team received votes throughout the season in the NAIA national poll.
The two teams both earned the No. 1 seed in the NAIA District 13 Tournament and combined to win 71 games, despite playing one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in the region. The teams would play numerous Division II programs during its spring trip to Florida and would also consistently defeat Division II North Central Conference teams.
