SMSU Athletics Hall of Honor
Erin Oakland (2003-07) was a multi-year letter winner in two sports and ranks as one of the top golfers in program history. She helped lead the Mustang golf program to three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Originally from Fulda, Minn., Oakland was a four-year letter winner in golf and stormed onto the scene during her freshman season in 2003-04. She earned All-NSIC honors, won the 2004 NCAA North Region individual title and became just the second Mustang to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Oakland finished 29th at the 2004 NCAA Championships held in Longwood, Fla., including closing the four-round championship with a final round score of 6-over 78. For her efforts, she was named the 2004 Minnesota State College Golf Association Freshman of the Year.
As a sophomore in 2004-05, Oakland earned All-NSIC honors and helped SMSU qualify for the NCAA North Region Championships. She finished the season with a team-low 82.3 stroke average and tied for ninth at the NCAA region championship.
In 2005-06, Oakland won the NSIC individual championship, earning 2005 NSIC Golf of the Year accolades and helping SMSU to a fourth place finish at the NCAA North Region Championship with a team-low 80.5 average.
During her senior season in 2006-07, Oakland once again led the team in stroke average with a-then school record 80.3, earning All-NSIC honors and qualifying as an individual to the NCAA North Region Championship. She just missed advancing to the NCAA Championships after placing eighth at the region championship.
Oakland finished her career winning a school record seven tournaments and ranked first in program history with an 81.6 stroke average. She was also a standout in the classroom, twice earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and was a four-time National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar.
Oakland was also a three-year member of the SMSU women’s basketball team, appearing in 59 games, scoring 145 points with 45 field goals and 15 3-pointers.
