SMSU Athletics Hall of Honor
Paul Soupir (2004-19) served as an assistant volleyball coach for 16 seasons helping the Mustang program to national prominence.
During his time as a volunteer assistant, SMSU finished with a record of 410-115 with 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including 11 NCAA region semifinal appearances, three NCAA region championship appearances and an NCAA national runner-up finish in 2014.
Despite his busy schedule as a farmer and raising a family, Soupir always found time to serve as instructor during SMSU volleyball summer camps and attend as many volleyball practices and matches during the fall and spring seasons.
Soupir began his association with former SMSU head volleyball coach Terry Culhane in 1980 helping coach volleyball and girls’ basketball at Milroy High School before consolidating with Tracy in 1986.
Paul was a part of 12 state tournament teams in volleyball, which included five state titles, one runner-up finish and one third-place finish. In girls’ basketball he was on staff for one state runner-up title at Milroy and two state championships with Tracy-Milroy.
Paul and Terry continued to work together until Terry moved to Marshall High School in 1997.
Paul, who passed away in October of 2020, is survived by wife, Marlene and their four children.
