Shelli (Schoeneck) Hawkinson (1999-2003) was a standout player for the SMSU women’s basketball team for four seasons and was a key member during the best four-year stretch in program history.

A native of Alexandria, Minn., Schoeneck played in all 29 games as a true freshman in 1999-2000, averaging six points per game and helping SMSU win 20 games for the first time in program history.

In 2000-01, SMSU won a school record 25 games, won the NSIC championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history. Schoeneck ranked third on the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg, while shooting 80 percent from the free throw line and racking up a team-high 63 steals. She was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year and was All-NSIC honorable mention.

As a junior in 2001-02, Schoeneck led the team averaging 15.4 ppg with a team-high 63 steals. She was second in rebounding (5.4), third in assists (91) and shot 49 percent from the field. SMSU won the NSIC regular season and tournament championship, with Schoeneck earning NSIC Tournament MVP honors, which included scoring 20 points with three 3-pointers, while grabbing seven rebounds and five steals in the championship game versus Minnesota Duluth. She was also named All-NSIC first team and Daktronics All-Region second team in helping the Mustangs win 24 games and advance to the NCAA Central Region Championship game.

Schoeneck would earn All-NSIC first team accolades during her senior season in 2002-03, scoring 14.2 ppg with a team-high 112 free throws made and team-leading 66 steals.

Schoeneck finished her career ranking second in school history in free throws made (380), fourth in assists (321), fourth in steals (224), fifth in points (1,488), sixth in field goals made (512) and sixth in field goal pct. (48.3).
