SMSU Athletics Hall of Honor
Char Nelson (women's basketball/track/volleyball, 1979-83) participated extensively in three sports during her career.
A native of Crystal, Minn., she was twice named an Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-America in track after placing fifth nationally in the heptathlon in 1981 and seventh in 1982. She also participated in the 1983 NAIA national meet and earned NAIA All-American honors with a second place finish in the hepthathlon. Nelson set the Northern Sun Conference heptathlon record in 1982 with 4,666 points. She was named All-NSC in the heptathlon in 1982 and in the high jump and the 100-meter hurdles in 1983.
She was also a volleyball standout earning all-conference honors in 1981 and 1982 and topped the league's offensive and defensive rankings in 1981. She also was named to the All-Minnesota Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division II teams in both 1981 and 1982. She rounded out her career with three years of basketball.
Nelson was inducted into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame in 2003.
