SMSU Athletics Hall of Honor
Laura Crowell (1996-2021) was an employee for the SMSU Athletics for 25 years serving one year as assistant athletic trainer before assuming the role as head athletic trainer in 1997.
Crowell was one the longest tenured employees in the SMSU Athletics Department when she retired, providing day-to-day protection and safety to Mustang student-athletes for nearly three decades.
As head athletic trainer, Crowell led full-time and student trainers as well as overseeing the entire SMSU Sports Medicine program and facilities at SMSU. The SMSU Athletics Department grew to 19 intercollegiate sports with more than 400 student-athletes during her tenure.
Crowell mentored countless full-time and student trainers in the sports medicine profession and was instrumental in helping oversee the expansion of SMSU athletic training room space and equipment needs, along with additional staffing in the athletic training department.
Crowell earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education with specialization in athletic training and her master’s degree in higher education from Iowa State University. She completed her doctorate in educational leadership from MSU Moorhead in 2021.
