Glenn Mattke (coach/administrator) was a member of SMSU's charter faculty, was the school's first men's basketball coach, serving two years with a 16-28 record.  He also served as the first men's golf coach (1969) and first baseball coach (1970). 

Mattke was named athletics director in June of 1970 and became head softball coach in 1981. He retired as athletic director in 1985, but stayed on as softball coach through the 1988 season. His softball teams posted a 106-125 record in those eight years and won NSIC titles in 1985 and 1986 and the NAIA District 13 crown in 1985. 

Mattke was also an inaugural inductee into the Northern Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame in 1986.
